Getting Started - First, decide how much change you want to make and how much change you need to make. Remember, it's not all or nothing -- the more you do, the more benefit you'll experience. For example, there is a range of diet choices you can make: the Healing Diet and the Metabolic Typing Diet are based on the idea that some people need to make different changes than others.
- Likewise, you have a range of choices in how much you exercise and how much yoga and meditation you choose to do. Even 20-30 minutes per day of walking provides most of the health benefits of more intensive exercise while minimizing the risks, according to a 1989 study in Journal of the American Medical Association. And even a few minutes a day of yoga and meditation can make a profound difference in your well-being.
- There are different stages of readiness for change. Even if you're not ready to make big changes now, just thinking about them for a while may help you to do so later, when you're ready.
- On the other hand, while even small, gradual changes have clear benefits, some people find that it's actually easier to make big changes all at once. They feel so much better, so quickly -- within just a few days, in many cases -- that it reframes the reason for changing diet and lifestyle from fear of dying to joy of living.
- As a rule of thumb, try to include foods in your diet that have less than three grams of fat per serving. Include foods in your refrigerator that you want to have on your diet. If it's not right in front of you, you're less likely to eat it. Cleaning out your refrigerator can be a nice metaphor for cleaning out your body and organizing your life in the way that you want it to be.
- Make a game out of comparing the nutritional labels on various food choices -- when shopping with friends or family see who can find the healthiest, tastiest choices.
- Save your favorite cookbooks -- simply substitute and modify ingredients to meet the program guidelines.
- Even simple choices can make a powerful difference. For example, many salad dressings are pure fat. Two tablespoons of most dressings have as much fat as two scoops of premium ice cream. When in a restaurant, ask for the dressing on the side; just dip the tips of your fork in it with each bite, and you'll get a fraction of the fat that you would otherwise.
Play around with creating a positive, uplifting phrase or affirmation that is both personally meaningful and felt -- say it to yourself (aloud, if you like) whenever you feel in need of a lift. (For example, "I possess abundant health," "I can do it, I will do it now," "Breathe in, relax" or "Breathe in, let it go"). - Schedule time to relax your body and release mental chatter. By placing such value on your peace of mind at some point each day (even if 5 minutes is all you have), your concentration and performance will be that much better.
